The first official launch event…

wycliffeThe book had its first official launch event last Wednesday, November 28, at Wycliffe College in Toronto. I was visiting Toronto and doing a number of things at both Wycliffe and Trinity Colleges, and was invited to introduce my book to a mixed group of students, faculty and College board members at an event launching books by several faculty members. They gave me close to half of the 45 minute session, which allowed me to not only speak to the book, but also to demonstrate my project by playing Coltrane’s haunting lament, “Alabama,” written and recorded in 1963 as a response to the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

Among the other books being launched was a new theological commentary on Daniel and Esther, written by College president George Sumner. As he wound up his very brief comments on his new book, he rather graciously added that given the choice between spending an hour reading his commentary or having an hour to explore the work of John Coltrane, he’d opt for the latter.

Thanks to all at Wycliffe who helped make it happen.
