jimmygreeneCondolences to Jimmy Greene and Nelba Márquez, as they grieve the death of their little girl Ana Grace, killed in the Newtown, Connecticut school tragedy. Formerly a faculty member of the University of Manitoba Jazz Studies program and a real presence on our local Winnipeg jazz scene (to say nothing of his profile in the New York scene…), Jimmy was one of the most supportive and engaged people I interviewed for the book. An excerpt from that conversation is available by clicking here.

Jimmy’s Mission Statement album includes a lovely song written for Ana, which now has added depth and poignancy. A lovely and gentle ballad suddenly has unexpected tones of lament. Sad days, indeed.

And because my primary vocation is that of a priest and preacher, it makes sense to include this link, which connects you to the text and audio of the sermon preached on Sunday December 16, in response to those deaths in Newtown.

May her soul, and the souls of all who died in Newtown last Friday morning, by the mercy of God rest in peace and rise in His promised glory.
