Two giants…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Wednesday February 6 marked the launch of my book in New York City at an event held at the Burke Library of Union Theological Seminary, where much of the research for my book took place. I was delighted that both James Cone (the eminent Black Liberation theologian, and author of The Spirituals and the Blues) and Cornel West (theologian, philosopher, and public intellectual) were in attendance. Their writings have had a deep imprint on my own work, and it was a privilege to have them both present. I couldn’t resist the photo opportunity…

In the case of Dr Cone, it is a rather understated image, in which I’m signing my book for him, and he is signing my copy of The Spirituals and the Blues for me.

Dr West is a in many ways a bigger than life character, and was more than happy to pose with me with my book in hand. And his comment to me was, “Your love and understanding of Coltrane are amazing.” He also told me that he’d just recommended the book to jazz legend Roy Haynes. Frankly, I couldn’t ask for more from one of this generation’s great authorities on the traditions of Black music.

And a word of thanks to Anthony Elia of the Burke Library for helping to make it all possible.
