From the Saint Peter’s Church Round Table

On Sunday February 10/13 I was delighted to be a part of a Coltrane “round table” conversation at  Saint Peter’s Church in Manhattan. Hosted by Ike Sturm – the  Music Director for the Jazz Ministry at Saint Peter’s – the event also included Gary Golio and Rudy Gutierrez, the author and illustrator of  a wonderful book for children (and others…) called Spirit Seeker: John Coltrane’s Musical JourneyThough their is a very different sort of book from my own, I think it is fair to say that Gary, Rudy and I felt we shared much common ground in how we understood the life and legacy of John Coltrane.

Rather than simply talking about our books on this great musician, we were fortunate to be able to frame the session with some very fine live music offered by the pianist and Coltrane scholar Lewis Porter, accompanied by Ike Sturm on bass and  Chris Dingman on vibraphone. I know that both Gary and I were particularly pleased that Lewis was able to be a part of the evening, as for both of us Lewis’s book John Coltrane: His Life and Music was an indispensable resource for the writing of our own books. And the interpretations of two Coltrane standards offered by this impromptu trio were really quite gorgeous.
