The death of one of the greats

Just received word that the pianist Cedar Walton died earlier this week, just shy of his 80th birthday. Walton played on some of the preliminary tracks for Coltrane’s Giant Steps record, though they remained unreleased until the expanded CD version was released. He also played with an extraordinary range of players, including Donald Byrd, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. One of my lasting regrets is that I didn’t make my way to the New York club Smoke, when he was playing there during one of my visits to that great jazz city.

One of the old school greats… the scene will miss him. To hear an interview and some of his music, simply click here.
