Jon Batiste at Newport

Jon Batiste at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, February 2011

The 2013 Newport Jazz Festival had an absolutely killer line-up, and thanks to NPR music it is all available online. I’ve already highlighted the performance of the Wayne Shorter Quartet in an earlier post, but couldn’t resist adding this one from Jon Batiste and Stay Human. I heard Batiste with a similar group during my 2011 study leave in New York, offering up an informal concert/workshop at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. I was amazed both by his technical ability and by his gift as an engaging performer, and so it was no surprise to discover just how fun this Newport set was. With Batiste on piano, melodica and vocals, this quintet also includes Eddie Barbash on alto sax, Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba (yes, tuba!), Philip Kuehn on bass, and Joe Saylor on drums. This young band was formed while all of the players were studying at Juilliard.
