Ravi Coltrane | Live at the Village Vanguard

A link to some great live music: Ravi Coltrane with his new quartet, which includes David Virelles on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums. Though his most recent album, Spirit Fiction, featured a quartet he’d been playing with for about a decade, apparently Coltrane decided it was time to move out from the familiar and to play with some new band-mates. The results are very fine indeed.

You can access the free streaming audio by clicking here. And while you’re on the NPR site, you might also want to take a listen to some other great concerts from the Vanguard. I’d particularly recommend the Dave King Trio (King is the drummer for The Bad Plus), and The Jimmy Cobb Quartet. Cobb was the drummer on many of Miles Davis’s greatest records, and also appeared on a number of John Coltrane’s recordings from the 1950s. Notably, he’s the drummer on the Coltrane classic, “Naima.”

So much music, so little time…
