Some great solo piano from Alice Coltrane

Back in 1981 Alice Coltrane appeared  on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz” program, offering up a fine set of solo pieces. There are a few solid originals, a version of Chopin’s “Prelude, Opus 27” (done collaboratively with McPartland, I find this one a bit too earnest) and covers of several of John’s pieces: “Miles’ Mode,” “Giant Steps,” and “Blues Minor.” McPartland joins her for dual piano versions of “Giant Steps” and “Miles’ Mode,” though to my ear the solo numbers actually work much better… less cluttered, and more simply striking. Still, as a whole it makes for an hour well spent.
